What's new?

Magnesium supplementation can prevent preeclampsia which is a major cause of maternal morbidity and mortality.

As per the findings of a recent systematic review published in 'The Iranian Journal of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Infertility', magnesium supplementation was found to be useful for reducing preeclampsia in women with hypomagnesemia. The present study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of magnesium supplementation for the prevention of preeclampsia among women. A systematic search of relevant clinical trials was conducted without time limitation until February 2, 2021, from clinical databases including PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and databases of Scopus.

The specific keywords such as Pregnancy Toxemia, Preeclampsia, Dietary Supplement, Pregnancy Toxemia, Dietary Supplement, Supplementation, Supplement, Magnesium, Intervention study, Clinical Trial, Clinical Studies, Randomized Clinical, and Controlled Clinical Trials were used with Boolean operators (OR, AND). Studies in the English language and including oral magnesium supplementation were considered. Cochrane collaboration's tool and Review Manager program software (RevMan 3.5) was used to analyze the quality of included articles. A total of 7 articles with 2111 people were included.

The magnesium supplements used in the studies were magnesium aspartate, effervescent magnesium, magnesium citrate, magnesium and multivitamin containing 200 mg of magnesium. The findings showed that magnesium supplements reduce the incidence of pre-eclampsia in women with a low risk of hypomagnesemia. However, high-quality studies with a sufficient sample size are required for definite conclusions.
