The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) IgM/IgG rapid test kits displayed a good diagnostic performance and is recommended for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) diagnostics in combination with reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) to detect the highly infected individuals. 

Background

A cross-sectional multicenter analysis was performed to investigate diagnostic performance of three test kits for detecting SARS-CoV-2 against RT-PCR. 

Method

The performance of the test kits was determined utilizing blood specimens against RT-PCR on the respiratory swabs. Computation of the specificity, sensitivity, and agreement with each other and to RT-PCR was done.

Result

A heterogeneous comparative diagnostic performance in the specificity and sensitivity of the test kits were noted. The following table shows the sensitivity, specificity, and agreement of the test kits with RT-PCR: 


A vital difference was noted in the performance among the test kits and PCR. It aids to assess the viral seroprevalence  and also the true extent of viral community spread in resource-limited settings. 

Conclusion

The rapid test kits in combination with RT-PCR may be used to detect highly-infected coronavirus patients and are essential for bridging the diagnostic gaps in community screening and healthcare facilities.
