The medical, and pharmaceutical research is working unanimously to improve the quality of life of the individuals. The ultimate aim of the research is to make life easier, safer and free from diseases and disorders. Many diagnostic and therapeutic developments have been made by the integral efforts of researchers, sponsors, and managers. The contribution of physicians in research has been remarkable which can be perceived on looking at the era of scientific evolution. Many studies have been evident for the title role of physicians in the management and leadership of health care. The report by the Medical Management Centre, commissioned by the Swedish Medical Association, presents such an analysis. With the better insight of patients, health and knowledge of medicine physicians can perform better to research. Moreover, with the direct and open communication with the other scientists, the research can be much more instrumental and effective. By this way, better diagnostic and therapeutic tools that are truly helpful and affordable for patients can be developed.

The doctor's knowledge and scientific acumen can manage research and take it to the level of success. Many biopharmaceutical companies, CROs, and government organizations have a team of physicians who are managers of various research projects. The doctors have undertaken a huge number of successful projects.

Medical research is a long process particularly the drug development phase the physicians with adequate motivation and proper planning, organizing, numerical and statistical analytical skills can achieve this long-term goal. For the individual research projects generating funding is also necessary to continue with the projects so the experience of writing grant applications can also be valuable in this sector.

The physicians following qualities;

  • Capacity to analyze, summarize and interpret the complex epidemiological data.
  • Precision and a methodical approach.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills to communicate ideas and  methods clearly and succinctly.
  • The ability to take responsibility for own and team members work.
  • As a team member of a multi-disciplinary team, the physician could manage all the arrangements to undertake research successfully.
  • Ability to liaise with a range of healthcare professionals, scientific and industry specialists.
  • Problem-solving skills to identify and find solutions to day-to-day practical problems.
  • Experience of presenting the work done to a varied group of internal and external stakeholders.

The physicians who have empathy can prove themselves as pioneers in research management. They can help in getting new projects from the sponsor companies. As the physicians have better subject knowledge thus can undertake following additional responsibilities;

  • Inclusion and exclusion criteria for patient/ subject recruitment for a clinical trial
  • Selection of trial site and site initiation
  • Recruitment of supporting staff
  • At the time of any ADRs or ADEs
  • Better patient care and coordination with other physicians

The association of physicians with the emerging technology can be a boon for the research and for sponsors. The physicians had developed critical thinking and analyzing ability which can make them managers with an excellent vision and problem-solving aptitude. Thus doctors can quickly overcome the obstacles arising in the path of research.
