What's new?

Supplementing probiotics, especially those with higher colony-forming units and mixed strains, can be a favorable approach to improve H. pylori complications.

In an umbrella meta-analysis, the use of probiotics appeared to be an efficient strategy for mitigating Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori)-related issues, majorly when utilizing probiotics with higher colony-forming units (CFUs) and mixed strains. Vali Musazadeh et al. sought to investigate the impact of probiotic supplementation on the eradication of H. pylori.

Electronic databases like Google Scholar, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science, and PubMed were explored for a relevant literature search. To assess the overall effect sizes (ES), the meta-analysis involved the calculation of pooled relative risk (RR) or odds ratio (OR) alongside their associated 95% confidence intervals (CI), utilizing the random-effects model.

A total of 18 eligible studies (n = 47,278) were encompassed. The outcomes demonstrated a positive influence of probiotics on the elimination of H. pylori, with pooled ESRR = 1.13 and ESOR = 1.86. Notably, more significant improvements in H. pylori elimination were evident when greater doses (>10 × 1010 CFU) and a combination of strains were administered. In conclusion, incorporating probiotic supplementation may be a promising strategy for addressing H. pylori-related complications.
