Patients with severe dental pain can be recommended Novafen and Ibuprofen for emergency pain relief.
In a recent randomized controlled trial published in the 'Iranian Endodontic Journal,' both Ibuprofen and Novafen (NSAIDs) were found to be effective choices for alleviating pain in patients with symptomatic irreversible pulpitis, especially when immediate emergency endodontic therapy is not feasible. Ali Eslambol Nassaj and researchers aimed to assess the pain relief efficacy of 4 pain relief drugs - Ibuprofen, Novafen, Mefenamic acid, and Celecoxib in patients suffering from symptomatic irreversible pulpitis prior to emergency endodontic procedures.
The clinical trial involved 117 patients (76 females and 41 males with an average age of 30.29 years) experiencing moderate to severe pain due to symptomatic irreversible pulpitis and seeking emergency endodontic treatment. Volunteers were allocated to either Novafen, Mefenamic acid, Celecoxib, or Ibuprofen group (four groups in total). The visual analogue scale (VAS) was used to assess pain levels before and one hour after the use of the analgesic.
The success of the analgesic treatment was assessed using binary logistic regression. As found, Ibuprofen exhibited the highest analgesic efficacy, followed by Novafen, causing a significantly greater reduction in pain scores when compared to Mefenamic acid and Celecoxib. Baseline pain scores were recognized as predictive factors for the success of the analgesics. The age and sex of the volunteers did not considerably affect the effectiveness of the analgesics under consideration.
