Key take away

Whole-Body Vibration (WBV) Exercise in postmenopausal women having low bone mineral density (BMD) enhances the leg muscle work and femoral and lumbar BMD. As per findings of a recent study, it was concluded that the after the WBV therapy the values of the hip, ankle and knee muscle work and BMD were considerably higher in postmenopausal women who have osteoporosis.

Background

This study was done to find the outcome of WBV on muscle work and BMD of the femur and lumbar vertebrae in postmenopausal women.

Method

In this study, 43 postmenopausal women having low bone mineral density were randomly allocated to whole-body vibration and control groups. Vitamin D and calcium supplementations, one time a day were received by both the groups. At the same time, the WBV group received WBV exercise additionally twice per week for 24 successive weeks.

To measure hip power generation, hip power absorption, knee power absorption, , knee power generation, ankle power absorption and ankle power generation, Qualisys gait analysis system was used. Furthermore, BMD of the femur and lumbar vertebrae before and following the intervention was calculated by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry.

Result

The results show the considerable increase in the hip muscle work, knee muscle work, ankle muscle work and the BMD of the femur and lumbar vertebrae of the WBV group. On the other side, no considerable variations were seen in the control group. The after therapy values of the hip, ankle and knee muscle work and BMD of the WBV group were considerably high as compared to the control group.

Conclusion

It is concluded that in postmenopausal women having low BMD, the WBV training enhanced the leg muscle work and femoral and lumbar BMD.
