Key take away

This randomized controlled study found the adjuvant use of a mixture of probiotic and prebiotic therapy to be effective in improving the quality of life in patients with chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU).

Background

To examine the safety and efficacy of a synbiotic mixture of probiotic and prebiotic therapy for CSU.

Method

Overall, 42 patients with CSU were randomized as (i) Intervention group (21 patients) receiving antihistamine and probiotic and; (ii) Control group (21 patients) receiving antihistamine alone for 8 weeks. Urticaria Activity Score (UAS7) and Persian validated Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) were utilized to examine the efficacy and patient's quality of life, respectively.

Result

Statistically significant decline in UAS7 score and improvement in DLQI score was observed in both the groups, as shown in the table below:

Conclusion

Probiotics are safe and effective adjunct therapy for patients with CSU with a high rate of satisfaction. As per the UAS7 score, the combo of probiotic and antihistamines had no considerable difference in efficacy when compared with antihistamines alone. However, these patients may experience greater reductions in itch, the number of urticaria, and overall UAS7 score along with improved DLQI score.
