Background

Factors associating anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction and patients may aid to recognise prognostic factors of the long-term result after reconstruction. The study aimed to assess inferior knee function linked 10-year risk factors after ACL reconstruction.

Method

The data of patients who went through ACL reconstruction from January 2005 to December 2006 were collected prospectively from the Swedish National Knee Ligament Register. Patients with no Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS) and 10-year follow-up for the Knee injury data were not included in the analysis. Assessment of 10-year surgery- and patient-associated risk factors over all the KOOS subscales and the KOOS4 were determined by using multivariable proportional odds regression modelling.

Result

A total of 874 patients with 27.5 years mean age during ACL reconstruction were involved. Reduction in KOOS on four subscales was noticed with an increase in the concomitant articular cartilage injuries severity (P < .05). Greater preoperative KOOS pain score raised the odds of a higher score on the symptoms, pain, KOOS4 and the sport subscales. Also, a more magnificent preoperative body mass index was a considerable risk factor for average scores on KOOS4 and 3 KOOS subscales. No surgery- or patient-associated predictor was notable across all KOOS subscales.

Conclusion

The analysis recognised various factors that influence long-term knee function following ACL reconstruction. Maximum risk factors were correlated to the preoperative patient-reported outcome and probably modifiable while many of the surgery-associated risk factors were nonmodifiable. The data may be valuable to physical therapists and physicians in counselling patients on their belief of consequences after ACL reconstruction.
